| Big Bend National Park surpasses visitor record (Jan 24th 2006) |
| PANTHER JUNCTION, TEXAS - Authorities say 2005 drew more people to Big Bend National Park than ever before. Park officials attribute the increase to media exposure and the Internet. Last year, nearly 401,000 people visited the park in Texas. That eclipses the 1976 record of 378,000 visitors. The land that's now part of Big Bend National Park was largely purchased by Texas in the early 1940's. It was established June 12th of 1944. Since then, annual visitor numbers have topped 300,000 numerous times. |

Both the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and the Marathon Chamber of Commerce have benefited greatly from everyone's support of this project with $5000.00 to be split between both organizations. | BBORR (Big Bend Open Road Race) (April 24 2005) |
| Marathon Chamber officers visited the BBORR this past Saturday in preparation for the Road Runner Open Road Race scheduled for October of this year. The BBORR runs from Fort Stockton to Sanderson and is held every April, The Road runner event is a new addition to an already successful format, and racers are very excited about the prospect of hitting speeds in excess of 200mph from Fort Stockton to Marathon (Oct 5 - 8 2005).

| Marathon Volunteer Fire Department Receives New Truck (December 28th 2004) |
| The Marathon Volunteer Fire Department is looking forward to the receipt of their new Engine. The Class A engine will be configured for fighting structure fires both within Marathon and in the back country of Brewster County. The chassis is a 2005 International 4x4 and the cab will contain 4 seats configured to allow the firemen to don their breathing apparatus during the trip to the incident in addition to the driver’s seat and control console. This truck will be the first for Marathon to meet the ISO requirements for a Class A engine. he truck will be equipped with new hose in 2.5” and 1.5” diameters, new nozzles and a complete ladder package to meet NFPA requirements. In addition to structure fires the Engine will be first response to motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents and rescues. It will be fitted with hydraulic rescue tools, a High Pressure Air Bag system, ventilation fan, spare breathing air, rescue saw, gas and radiation detectors, laser thermometer, first aid supplies, oxygen and an Automated External Defribulator. This vehicle will be capable of supporting the members of the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department in their efforts to serve the needs of the community at the level of training that the members have achieved through intensive training. The unit was scheduled to arrive on December 28th but was postponed until undergoing extensive testing at the factory. The MVFD will have an open house to allow the public to view the truck and other equipment as soon as possible.
